Spring Fest is an annual, weekend-long event held at Purdue that strives to connect the community to the university. Held in the heart of academic campus, Spring Fest is home to activities for students of all ages. Various clubs, colleges, and outside vendors set up booths around campus to show a lighter side of education.

This year, the Honors College had a booth in the center of Memorial Mall to showcase various projects from the four freshmen seminars classes: Nation, Heroism, Water, and Play. Throughout the Nation class, students created a timeline detailing important dates in the formation of our nation. During Spring Fest, guests were given the chance to take sticky notes, write important dates on them, and then add them to a giant unofficial timeline of the United States. To demonstrate the ideas of the Heroism class, kids were given the opportunity to transform Honors College t-shirts into superhero capes. Then, they created their own emblem and mask to top off their super-hero outfits. Students of the Water class showcased their waterscape projects to spread awareness of water pollution. Finally, the section of the tent devoted to the Play class gave visitors the opportunity to try out some of the various games Purdue students had created during their class. Aside from the interactive projects, the Honors College tent was also home to great conversations among students, faculty, and community members.

Honors College freshman Claire Lee was an integral aspect of the success of the Honors College tent. By helping set up the projects and then working at the main table, Claire was able to help with the Honors College while doing something she loves—connecting with the community. When asked about her experience at Spring Fest this year, Claire replied, “My favorite aspect of working the Honors College tent was being able to witness all of our visitors’ amazement at the wonderful work done by Honors College Students this year. Watching the little kids run around in their superhero capes and interact with the games, projects, and timeline made the whole day so much fun”.
